Worcester’s historic Guildhall (High Street Worcester, WR1 2EY) has a new option with a twist to offer to couples considering tying the knot in 2020 and beyond.
The City Council now has a licence to conduct marriage ceremonies in The Guildhall’s cells – an atmospheric option for those who want a wedding with a difference!
This week saw the first wedding ceremony in the Guildhall cells take place, on Tuesday 3 March.
“More and more couples are looking for a setting which is a little different, fun and quirky in which to celebrate their big day,” explains Guildhall event organiser Aimee Allen.
“The Guildhall cells offer a truly unique setting, which your guests will certainly never forget! They are perfect for small, intimate weddings through to functions for several people.”
In the nineteenth century the Guildhall was used as the City’s Court; prisoners were kept in the cells to await their fate, after sentencing had taken place. A number of 21st century visitors have reported hearing moaning and screaming noises omitting from the cells, which is reported as being one of the seven most haunted sites in Worcestershire (source: www.hauntedrooms.co.uk).
For those who prefer a more traditional wedding, the Guildhall also offers six rooms in the main part of the building - including the opulent Assembly Room, Court Room and Council Chamber.
