National Literacy Trust - Birmingham opportunities for partners

Hello to all partners of the National Literacy Trust in Birmingham,

This week I am sharing details of our free financial literacy programme for settings working with young people, as well as a reminder of our #MyBirminghamStory call-out for local stories.

Settings working with 15-19 year-olds: Words that Count programme

The National Literacy Trust sport team has a great, free, financial literacy programme which is now recruiting: and it would be great to have lots of Birmingham settings involved.

Words that Count is a 6 x 1 hour session, financial literacy programme for 15-19 year olds from disadvantaged backgrounds. The programme aims to empower young people with the information needed to understand various financial topics in an accessible and interesting way. Topics include income, tax, budgeting, debt, decision making, security and more.

Thanks to funding from Experian this programme is fully resourced and offered free of charge. In some cases, we will be able to provide very limited financial support to aid your delivery. This will only be for those settings who do not receive statutory funding, such as community sports organisations.

If you are interested in getting involved, please send me a quick email.

All settings: #MyBirminghamStory campaign

Our #MyBirminghamStory campaign is nearly over – but there is still time to get involved.

We want to hear the stories that connect people to Birmingham: whether as born and bred Brummies, newcomers to the city, or far-off admirers.

We welcome submissions from your staff – and both adults and young people in your community. It would be particularly amazing if you could run a ‘My Birmingham Story’ workshop to encourage participation, using our FREE resources.

Stories can be submitted in writing (using the worksheet pro-forma, attached), or as short videos (see guidance document). All stories will be profiled on our website and social media – and form part of a city-wide human-library, celebrating our home.

For inspiration, check out our website for some amazing existing submissions, such as this video by Iona Mandal, Birmingham Young Poet Laureate.

Send your stories to birmingham@literacytrust.org.uk before Friday 22 March 2024, or upload them to social media and tag us on Instagram or Facebook.
