Worcester’s heritage venues are hosting a nine-day celebration of the historic city – and everyone is invited!
There will be a whole host of family friendly events going on between February 9 and February 18, at churches, museums, libraries and other public venues across the city.
Saturday 10 February will see St Swithun’s Church hosting ‘Rave in the Nave’ – two hours of family-friendly music as well as arts and crafts and face painting. On the same day, Magical Maps will form the theme for children’s drop-in activities in the Hive Children’s Library.
This year’s Light Night Worcester will be held on February 14 and 15. Organised by Severn Arts, the two-day event will see the city centre lit with giant light-based artworks, colourful interactive installations and inspiring artistic commissions. Running from 6pm to 9pm on both nights, the event is free and suitable for all ages.
Living History weekend will be held on 17 and 18 February and will see 200 re-enactors covering 2000 years of history in six venues around the city centre, including the Roman, Viking, Medieval, English Civil Wars, Napoleonic periods and beyond.
Many of these events will run across both days, including Ragged Victorians at Tudor House, Tudor re-enactors at Greyfriars and WWI and WWII military vehicles at Cathedral Square. There will also be encampments at The Commandery with military drills and music and dancing in the Great Hall.
Saturday-only events include WWI and WWII displays in the Guildhall and local history and heritage groups at St Helen’s Church.
Sheena Payne-Lunn, Worcester’s Historic & Environment Record Officer will be signing copies of her books Worcester Life Stories and The Big Quiz Edition in the Tourist Information Centre at the Guildhall, between 12 noon and 2pm on Saturday 17.
On Sunday 18 February, the Museum of Royal Worcester are celebrating Chinese New Year with the Worcestershire Chinese Association, including a Dragon Dance at 12:30pm.
