The Mayor of Worcester has paid a special visit to Nunnery Wood High School to meet pupils who are preparing clothes and practising their catwalk moves for a charity fashion show he is hosting.
Councillor Louis Stephen popped in to see first-hand how clothes donated to the city’s Age UK shops are being adapted and accessorised for the glittering event at the Guildhall on Thursday 14 March.
Year 9 arts award students are busy transforming the clothes by painting new designs on to them, adding 3D flowers and more. On the night itself, year 10 dance students will be modelling the clothes and performing.
All funds raised from the event will go to the Mayor’s charity appeal in aid of Age UK Worcester & Malvern Hills. Tickets are available from civicoffice@worcester.gov.uk.
Cllr Stephen said: “I’m really encouraged by the fantastic work I’ve seen today, I can see some real skills developing. The pupils are working extremely hard and it’s great to see the quality of what they’ve done to re-use these clothes and to help raise money.”
The Mayor was shown around Nunnery Wood’s art department by headteacher Stephen Powell, who said: “A visit from the Mayor is educational for the pupils because it’s an opportunity to talk about his role and the role of Worcester City Council.
“The costumes and the fashion items the pupils are working on are really striking, very professionally put together and I think people who go to the charity fashion show are in for a treat.”
Students at HOW College and Christopher Whitehead Language College are also making and modelling clothes at the Mayor’s Charity Fashion Show on 14 March. Their creations will be auctioned off in aid of Age UK during the evening at the Guildhall, which will also include live musical entertainment and a two-course meal.
The Mayor said: “It’s going to be a great event because we will be supporting the schools and they are going to be supporting us. It’s very much a way of working with the community to create a really enjoyable social event and also raise money for a very good cause, so I would like to encourage people to email civicoffice@worcester.gov.uk to book their tickets.”
