Cattle return to Cannock Chase

Cattle at Cannock Chase photo

The cattle have arrived at Cannock Chase!

Around 15 native cows will graze at Moors Gorse as part of an important project to restore heartland habitats in an environmentally friendly way.

Heathland is rarer than rainforest and, nationally, we have lost over 80% since 1800, leaving many wildlife species facing an uncertain future.

The benefits of conservation grazing:

  • Helps flowering plants to grow for pollinators
  • Prevents scrubland and small trees from growing out of control
  • Creates bare ground in small areas, which will be used by rare invertebrates such as beetles and solitary bees
  • Diversifies plant ages which makes habitats more attractive to wildlife

The grazing cattle will be a mix of native breeds including belted Galloways, Herefords and Highland Cows!
